BREAKING: A 46-year-old motorist is dead after gunfire from another vehicle tore into his Volkswagen while he drove toward New Jersey across the GWB late Tuesday, the Daily News reported, citing officials and law enforcement sources. Investigators think the shot came near the West 179th Street on-ramp on the Manhattan end. Though wounded, he kept driving out onto the bridge until his car hit a median and came to rest, sources told the Daily News and NBC New York. Police sources told NBC they suspect road rage, and that one bullet appears to have punched through a rear window and the driver's headrest. The NYPD confirmed the man died at Englewood Medical Center, CBS News New York reported. He lived in Rockland County, according to the Daily News; NBC's sources said he was a Con Edison employee who was not on the clock. Authorities have not released his name. Port Authority police, who are leading the probe, have made no arrests and have not described the shooter. The Jersey-bound upper deck stayed shut for hours.
