The battle in Iran is two things at once. There’s the actual conflict itself, and the people who come between the data and the public to shape public opinion on those stories.
The conflict has had some casualties, but in terms of checking objectives off the to-do list, it’s hard to imagine what a more successful campaign might look like, especially against a recalcitrant foe that thinks dying in battle gets you a laminate pass into heaven. (Something something, 72 Virginians)
Although the fighting is thousands of miles away, the real battle fills the space between what happened, and when folks back home process the news about what happened. Decisions are made about what to feature, what to leave out. What lens to look through each event through. Whose claims to believe.
Even something like the fuel depot that burned in Tehran, do we view it as a horrifying step backward, or brining the terrorized citizens of Iran one step closer to being liberated from a regime that has raped and murdered their daughters, and intentionally blinded women as a form of punishment? What’s real? What’s old footage? What’s AI? Which videos are from the citizens, which are from supporters of the regime?
Partisans are using this as an opportunity (so close to the midterms) as an opportunity to dunk on both Trump and the consequences of his polices.
It’s hard to find a more reliable parrot for the left’s narrative than Brian and Ed Krassenstein.
The first volley of the flame war started on March 7, when one of the vertically-challenged influencers decided he was an expert on oil and gas. He didn’t write because he cares about the issue. He just sees a cudgel he can use to whack Trump over the head. His tweet included the sentence “People just don’t understand how big of a mistake. This really was by Trump. He vastly miscalculated the tools that Iran has to harm the US economy.”
The US Oil and Gas association did not find his contribution to the global conversation on gas prices helpful or compelling.
It’s important we all stay in our specific lanes of expertise.
