Three people, including a child, survived after the small plane they were aboard nosedived into a busy Northern California intersection Saturday afternoon, leaving the aircraft heavily damaged in the middle of the roadway. The Oct. 17 crash, according to the San Jose Fire Department, occurred just after 3 p.m. near the intersection of Capitol Expressway and Excalibur Drive. “Two adults and one child transported with non-life-threatening injuries out of an abundance of caution,” fire officials said in a post to X. Despite the crash occurring on a busy roadway, no other vehicles were struck and no injuries were reported on the ground. Photos of the wreckage released by the fire department show the heavily damaged aircraft resting on its nose, with its tail pointed skyward in the middle of the street. Part of the plane’s interior appears to have been exposed, though it’s unclear whether that damage occurred during the crash or as firefighters worked to reach the three people aboard. The crash caused significant traffic disruptions as firefighters and police worked to secure the scene and remove the wreckage. Fire officials told the Times that the aircraft also leaked a small amount of fuel, which crews were able to absorb. It took approximately three hours to clear the wreckage from the roadway, according to the Times. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
