Emergency crews rushed to a recycling facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Monday evening after reports of a fire at a metal recycling yard triggered a response from local authorities.
Officials said officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the call at approximately 7:40 p.m. on March 9. The incident occurred at 1525 King Highway, the listed address for Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers, a scrap and recycling facility in the city. Authorities said firefighters were still working to control the blaze more than an hour after the first emergency call.
According to public safety spokesperson Zach Hamelton, the fire appeared to be confined to an outdoor pile of material at the facility. Officials said the blaze had not spread to buildings within the recycling centre as crews worked to extinguish the flames.
However, the fire generated heavy black smoke, which could be seen from surrounding areas near King Highway. Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising high above the industrial site, prompting concern among residents and motorists travelling nearby.
Shortly after the fire began, images and videos of the thick smoke were widely shared on social media platforms by passers-by and nearby residents. Some footage showed dark smoke billowing above the recycling yard as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
Despite the dramatic visuals, authorities said the situation remained contained within the facility grounds. Officials said that traffic on King Highway remained open while emergency crews continued their response operations. Authorities did not immediately report injuries or damage to nearby properties.
Investigators are expected to determine the cause of the fire once the scene is fully secured. For now, emergency responders remain on site as firefighters continue efforts to completely extinguish the blaze.
