President Donald Trump recently suggested that the United States could join Saudi Arabia in renewed strikes on Yemen, even though further U.S. military action could end the ceasefire with the Houthi movement and provoke attacks on American-linked shipping in the Red Sea. In this segment Jimmy argues that Saudi Arabia reignited the conflict by bombing Sanaa International Airport in July, and says the Houthis have demonstrated their ability to resist attacks by more powerful militaries despite years of fighting and substantial destruction in Yemen. Jimmy warns that renewed U.S. involvement could threaten shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, increase economic pressure, and deepen a conflict that Congress has not authorized, while criticizing the broad use of the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force to justify decades of military operations. He also discusses Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s growing unpopularity and the estimated billions spent on U.S. operations against the Houthis, and openly expresses support for the Houthis’ resistance to Saudi and American military pressure.
