Our Bible study had settled comfortably into Matthew 15. Here the Pharisees had traveled from Jerusalem with a complaint about ceremonial hand-washing, and Jesus answered with a far more serious charge: a religious loophole that allowed a man to declare his resources “given to God” and so excuse himself from caring for his aging parents. Heads nodded around the room. It is always easy to agree with Jesus when He is correcting somebody else.
Then a local pastor guest spoke up. “What offends the mind reveals the heart.”
