The Army hasn't executed a soldier since 1961. Now Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan is scheduled to face a firing squad on December 3rd, at the same base where he murdered 13 people in 2009.
Retired Navy submarine veteran Ben Dykes, 20 years on submarines, breaks down all four men on U.S. military death row at Fort Leavenworth: Ronald Gray, Hasan Akbar, Timothy Hennis, and Nidal Hasan. Gray's execution was approved by President Bush in 2008 and stayed by a judge days before it was carried out. He has been on death row since 1988. Will Hasan's execution actually happen, or will the courts stop it again?
In this video:
- The last U.S. military execution, Pvt. John Bennett, 1961
- Ronald Gray, the 82nd Airborne cook still on death row after 38 years
- Hasan Akbar's 2003 grenade attack on his own unit at Camp Pennsylvania, Kuwait
- Timothy Hennis: acquitted, then convicted decades later by DNA
- Why Nidal Hasan got the presidential signature, and the others didn't
- The "martyr" argument, and why the victims' families deserve closure
