A seemingly light-hearted YouTube vlog byKai Trumphas erupted into a viral controversy after viewers accused the US president's granddaughter of turning taxpayer-funded security into social media content, exposing the uneasy overlap between political power and influencer culture.
The 18-year-old influencer andcompetitive golferquietly altered the title of her video after widespread criticism erupted online over a clip showing her shopping at an ultra-expensive grocery store while accompanied by USSecret Serviceagents.
The video was originally uploaded to her YouTube channel on 8 March 2026 under the title 'I Brought My Secret Service to Erewhon', before later being changed to 'I Tried the World's Most Expensive Grocery Store'. The edit came after clips circulated widely on social media, including a viral post shared by TMZ on X that rapidly drew thousands of views.
The episode has triggered a debate about privilege, taxpayer-funded protection and the growing role of political families in influencer culture.
In the vlog, Kai Trump films herself visiting Erewhon, a luxury organic grocery chain in Los Angeles known for high-end wellness products and premium food items.
Introducing the outing to viewers, she explains: 'If you guys don't know Erewhon, Erewhon is the most expensive grocery store pretty much out there. Everything's crazy expensive, so we're going to get my favourite stuff.'
Throughout the video, Secret Service agents can be seen accompanying her through the shop, part of the protective detail routinely assigned to close family members of the US president.
The vlog shows Trump browsing the aisles, sampling food and filling a basket with supplements, drinks and other high-end items. At one point she tries the shop's celebrity-inspired strawberry smoothie linked to model Hailey Bieber, a drink that sells for roughly £17 ($21).
Her total purchase eventually exceeds £183 ($233), including food items and branded merchandise such as anErewhon sweatshirtpriced at roughly £130 ($165).
While standing at the checkout counter, Trump jokes to the camera about the rising total. 'I'm like about to go bankrupt with this stuff,' she laughs, later adding, 'I'm gonna have to file for bankruptcy.'
