A new poll indicates that 64 percent of Americans believe artificial intelligence (AI) is developing "too fast."
The Associated Press-NORC Center poll released on Oct. 8 indicated that just 27 percent say the development is "about right," and less than 10 percent think it's moving "too slow."
Of the polled adults, more Democrats (76 percent) than Republicans (54 percent) think AI is moving too fast. However, 70 percent of those under 30 years old think the technology should be slowed, and 60 percent of those 60 years old and older think the same.
It comes amid growing concern over the technology's potential threat to humanity, which has led to industry leaders and politicians calling for a slowdown and more regulation.
President Donald Trump has dismissed calls for more regulation, saying the United States needs to maintain its edge over China in the AI race. Major AI companies recently signed a voluntary accord with the White House that calls for internal and external reviews.
