Two sisters, Emory Rose Deacon, 2, and Harlow Paige Deacon, 15 months, were found dead on September 29, 2026, in Ladson, South Carolina, near Charleston. The coroner determined they died from starvation and dehydration due to neglect. Their mother, Justine Marie May, faces two counts of homicide by child abuse.
Sheriff Carl Ritchie confirmed that a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office supervisor discontinued additional welfare checks on September 22. The coroner estimated the girls died three to five days before their discovery, placing their deaths approximately September 24–26.
We’re reviewing the Justine May bodycam footage, 911 call and radio audio, family warnings, and the sheriff’s press conference. The August 30 and September 12 recordings document visits involving deputies, the South Carolina Department of Social Services and Mobile Crisis.
The girls’ father, Zachary “Zack” Deacon, had requested welfare checks and was later arrested on a harassment allegation. His family disputes how authorities handled his concerns and is seeking an independent investigation. Ritchie says earlier visits showed no immediate need for intervention; an internal review is underway.
