Former CIA analyst Larry Johnson argues that the U.S. military’s withdrawal of B-1 bombers from Britain during the Iran warcould have been a diplomatic gesture toward Iran, a response to concerns about drone attacks, or an attempt to create complacency in the enemy before another potential strike. Johnson argues that the conflict has exposed limitations in U.S. military power, however, comparing it to the “Wizard of Oz” phenomenon and pointing to difficulties involving air defenses, aircraft carriers, missile stocks, logistics, and the vulnerability of overseas bases. Johnson notes that Iran has survived the U.S. attack while striking American bases in the Persian Gulf, forcing U.S. forces to reposition, and argues that Russia and other countries are now observing these limitations in American military capabilities. The discussion concludes with Johnson arguing that depleted weapons inventories, dependence on rare-earth minerals from China, and the difficulty of concentrating large numbers of troops near Iran have exposed significant logistical and strategic constraints on U.S. power.
