Seven people were on board when the aircraft dived into Lake Atitlán in Sololá, Guatemala, at about 12.45pm yesterday (8 Oct). The five individuals rescued alive survived without injury, and were put up at the hotel they were heading for. Police named the missing pair as Captain Jorge Rodolfo Maldonado, the pilot, and passenger Pablo José Polanco Agustín, and said both were still inside the submerged machine. Those brought to safety were Andrea Lozano Ardón de Sittenfeld, Diego Díaz, César Enrique Morales Catú, Caterin Victoria Chay Carrillo and Sandra Natali Santizo Romero. The Civil National Police said the group was made up of businesspeople from the capital on their way to a training session at Hotel Atitlán, and that the session was cancelled after the crash. Volunteer firefighters and army frogmen searched for the pair until rain forced them to stop with a restart set for first light today.
