Taking to Truth Social, Trump said, "Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran national women soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed. Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give Asylum. The US will take them if you won’t. Thank you for your attention to this matter." The soccer team members may face a possible threat after theyrefused to sing their national anthemduring their first game in Australia against South Korea.
Donald Trump urges Australia not to send back Iranian women soccer team
The Iranian women's soccer team had arrived in Australia to participate in the Asian Cup well before the strikes by Israel and the US on Iran last Saturday. On Monday, the team refused to sing their national anthem ahead of the first match against South Korea. Singing a national anthem is a practice that is followed globally.
The Iranian women’s team's refusal to sing the national anthem triggered serious repercussions back at home in Iran, where by then, the war had already started. The issue brawled up so quickly and seriously that it came up to the level of risking team members' lives.
A while ago, after Donald Trump urged Australia to give them (the Iranian women’s soccer team) asylum, the US President also reposted a user's post on Truth Social who said that senior Iranian regime propagandists threatened to have members of the Iranian women's football team killed because they didn't sing the national anthem at a game in Australia this week.
The shared post further reads, "The women were then basically held under armed guard in Australia by Iranian officials to prevent them from escaping - they were even seen making SOS signals on their team bus. The Australian government inexplicably dragged its feet on saving them right up until the last possible moment."
"Five girls just escaped and claimed asylum. The rest face a flight home tomorrow to almost certain persecution," reads the post.
The user further accused Australia saying, "This is the same Australian government which wants to import literal ISIS members from Syrian prison camps - they've spent the past month trying to get ISIS brides back on planes to Australia. But they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to protect 5 women fleeing Islamist persecution."
