MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — Police are searching for a driver who fled after a vehicle struck a Middletown home early Friday, causing a gas leak and fire that destroyed the house. The crash happened about 2:30 a.m. on Roosevelt Boulevard. Middletown police body camera video captured an explosion at the scene. Assistant Chief Steve Ludwig said the vehicle hit the home, damaging a gas line and sparking the fire about 30 minutes later. The driver left before officers arrived, while a passenger was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not immediately known. Three adults inside the home escaped safely Firefighters waited for Duke Energy to shut off gas and electric service before attacking the fire. Officials said crews quickly extinguished the flames once the utilities were disconnected, but debris had to be cleared before the lines could be reached because there was no separate meter near the road.
