Twenty years ago, three Duke lacrosse players were accused of a horrific crime, and much of the country decided they were guilty before all the evidence was in.
They were later officially declared innocent.
Now, seven former Cornell students face extremely serious sexual-assault allegations, and once again the court of public opinion is moving much faster than the actual justice system.
In this video, I examine what is currently known about the Cornell allegations, the evidence that has emerged, the conflicting accounts, Cornell's disciplinary proceedings, the reopened criminal investigation, and the disturbing case of an innocent Marine who was reportedly mistaken for one of the defendants.
Then we go back to Duke Lacrosse and ask the question we apparently still haven't learned to ask:
What happens when accusation becomes conviction before the evidence has been fully examined?
This isn't an argument that the Cornell 7 are innocent.
It isn't an argument that the accuser is lying.
It's an argument for something much simpler:
Investigate the allegation. Examine the evidence. Protect victims.
Preserve due process. And don't pretend we know the verdict before a court does.
Because Duke doesn't tell us what happened at Cornell.
Duke tells us why we shouldn't pretend we already know.
