Manama:Iran on Sunday (March 8) renewed its attacks in the Gulf countries, with strikes targeting Bahrain's BAPCO oil facility. Notably, BAPCO is the largest oil refinery in Bahrain. A video of moments after the attack surfaced online. In the clip, a thick black smoke could be seen billowing out of the facility.

Iran reportedly carried out the attack on theoil facilityon the day when an assembly of clerics named Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the country. According to reports, Bahrain authorities confirmed damage to the oil facility. Meanwhile, there are no reports of any injuries in the attack.

After the attack, Bapco Energies announced force majeure on group operations, reported Al Jazeera, citing local media reports. According to the force majeure clause, parties are no longer obliged to meet their supply obligations due to some uncontrollable external events.

BAPCO oil refinery is Bahrain's main oil refinery and a key facility in the Gulf country's energy sector. As per the refinery's official website, Bapco Refining currently owns a 267,000 bpd refinery, along with storage facilities for 14 million barrels. The refinery, located in Bahrain’s southern governorate, comprises various operational units such as Atmospheric Crude Distillation Units, Vacuum Distillation Units, and Low Sulphur Fuel Oil Complex.

The assembly of cleric on Sunday named Mojtaba as the next supreme leader of the country. Notably, Mojtaba is the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's second supreme leader, who was killed in the US and Israel's joint airstrikes on Iran on February 28.

Iranian President 'Apologised' To Gulf Countries For Attacks:

On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had apologised to the neighbouring Gulf countries for carrying out attacks on them. He had said that neighbouring countries will no longer be targeted unless an attack on Iran is launched from their territory. However, after reportedly facing criticism, Pezeshkian had issued a new statement on his country's position. In his second statement, Pezeshkian said that Iran has the right to defend itself against US and Israeli military aggression, and it is targeting facilities that are the origin and source of aggressive actions against his nation.
