Is Washington preparing for the worst? Fresh satellite imagery has revealed that the US has mounted its Patriot air defence missiles onto mobile truck launchers at its biggest military base in the Middle East - the al-Udeid air base in Qatar. As tensions with Iran intensify, this move is significant as it allows the missile launchers to be repositioned quickly if needed.
A report by Reuters states that analysis of the imagery shows that the Patriot systems have been loaded onto M983 Heavy Expanded Mobile Tactical Trucks (HEMTT), instead of being stationed in semi-static launcher positions. This shift happened in early February, the report adds. The move increases operational flexibility, as it enables rapid deployment or repositioning in the event of a potential Iranian strike.
Forensic imagery analyst William Goodhind said that comparisons of satellite photos between January and early February show a broader military build-up across the region. At al-Udeid specifically, Patriot systems were seen mounted on HEMTT vehicles at the start of February. "The decision to do so gives the Patriots much greater mobility, meaning they can be moved to an alternative site or repositioned with greater speed," he said.
The report adds, however, that it remains unclear if the missiles are still mounted on the trucks. The Pentagon has not commented on the matter so far.
This significant shift in the US' military posture comes amidst escalating rhetoric with Iran. US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that Washington could bomb Iran over its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, its backing of proxy groups across the Middle East, as well as its ineternal crackdown on civilian protesters. Trump's warning comes even as the two nations are trying to hold talks over Iran's nuclear weapons programme.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned that any strike on Iranian territory would trigger retaliation, with US bases in the region coming under attack. US maintains bases not only in Qatar, but also in Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Oman, Turky and on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
Tehran, meanwhile, has signalled its own military preparedness. Iranian officials have said that missile stockpiles have been replenished since the two-week conflict with Israel in the summer of 2025. Israel had targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities, a campaign that was later joined by the US.
Iran maintains underground missile complexes near Tehran, as well as at Kermanshah, Semnan and along the Gulf coast.
Satellite imagery has also shown the Iranian naval drone carrier IRIS Shahid Bagheri operating near Bandar Abbas on January 27 and again on February 10.
