Wappingers Falls, NY - Body camera footage from a police shooting in June that left a 17-year-old dead shows several officers firing a volley of shots as the teenager suddenly moves toward a State Police investigator who is speaking with him. A knife police said he was armed with is not visible in the footage released Wednesday, but the investigator can be heard discussing the weapon with the teenager in the minutes before the fatal shooting; the state attorney general’s office said police recovered a knife at the scene. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of June 27 in Wappingers Falls. The teenager, Oscar Granados Colindres, was seated on the railing of the Wappingers Falls Creek Bridge while being questioned by a State Police investigator. State troopers, as well as Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office deputies and village of Wappingers Falls police officers, were all at the scene and had responded to a report of a suicidal person. According to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation, Colindres was upset because he was a suspect in a criminal rape case. His parents had recently kicked him out of the house, the source added. The videos begin with Colindres sitting on the railing of the bridge, speaking with an officer standing on the other side of the sidewalk by a parked car. A group of at least five other officers stands in the middle of the road with a State Police vehicle behind them. Farther away, two sheriff’s deputies are near a patrol car. The officers spoke with Colindres for approximately 50 minutes, according to the attorney general’s office, in a mix of English and Spanish. About five minutes of that conversation is audible in one of the bodycam videos released Wednesday.
