The ruling follows Tennessee’s fight to remove a last-minute legal block on Christa Gail Pike’s execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The Sixth Circuit had temporarily halted the execution while considering a dispute over her attempt to reopen earlier federal proceedings.
Pike was sentenced to death for the January 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student in Knoxville, Tennessee. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing and is now 50.
We’re covering the decision lifting the stay, the state’s push to carry out the sentence, and developments from Riverbend. We’ll also examine the Colleen Slemmer murder case and the legal arguments behind the temporary halt. Clearance to proceed does not itself confirm that the execution has been completed.
