Tennessee is pushing to proceed after the Sixth Circuit temporarily halted Christa Gail Pike’s scheduled September 30 execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The state has asked the Supreme Court to vacate the stay, meaning remove the order blocking the execution. That request is not itself permission to proceed.
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was 18 when the crime occurred and is now 50.
We’re following the Christa Pike stay of execution, Tennessee’s emergency application, and the legal dispute behind the delay. Coverage includes the case history and her attorneys’ effort to reopen earlier federal proceedings involving the treatment of her childhood abuse evidence.
Will the stay remain in place, or will Tennessee be allowed to proceed? Share your thoughts on the court fight respectfully, and subscribe for continued coverage.
