A woman collapses in public and needs immediate lifesaving treatment. A man nearby knows what to do. So why might he hesitate? That’s the uncomfortable question behind this video. Using an AED on a woman can require close physical contact and access to her chest. And for some men, that creates another calculation they never should have to make during a medical emergency: Could helping her expose me to an accusation or lawsuit afterward? In this video, I respond to a viral explanation for why women may be less likely to receive lifesaving intervention from bystanders, examine the guidance surrounding AED use, and discuss something that often gets left out of the conversation: why some men believe helping a woman can carry risks of its own.
