Huge blasts echoed across Tehran overnight as Israeli air strikes hit fuel infrastructure in several parts of the capital, triggering fires and sending thick smoke rising into the sky. Dramatic visuals emerged from near the Shahran Boulevard area, where explosions damaged gasoline pipelines close to theShahran Oil Depot. The strikes caused fuel to leak and ignite, sparking fires that spread along nearby roads.

Witness videos showed flames stretching across streets as burning fuel flowed through parts of the neighbourhood. Residents described scenes resembling a "river of fire" moving through the city.

The attacks were part of a wider wave of strikes on energy infrastructure in and around Tehran. Iranian officials said at least five oil facilities were hit, including four storage depots and a petroleum products transport centre. Large fireballs and towering plumes of smoke were visible from several districts and even neighbouring areas such as Karaj, according to reports and footage circulating online.

Authorities said at least four people were killed in the strikes, including two tanker drivers, according to the head of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company.

Emergency crews worked through the night to control the blazes as oil continued burning at some of the damaged tanks. Officials said the fires were eventually brought under control, though fuel distribution in parts of the capital was temporarily disrupted while the damage was assessed.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed its aircraft had struck fuel storage facilities in Tehran, saying the sites were targeted to prevent their use by Iran's military. Smoke from the burning fuel lingered over the city into the following morning, leaving a dark haze hanging above the capital and a strong smell of fuel in the air, residents said.

Israel has issued a warning on a Farsi-language social media account aimed at members of Iran's Assembly of Experts, which is expected to choose a successor to the late Ali Khamenei. "This is a warning," the message said. "We warn all those who intend to participate in the successor selection meeting that we will not hesitate to target you. This is a warning!"

Iranian state media say the Assembly has reached a decision on a successor, although no name has yet been announced.

The latest strikes come amid a widening conflict that began on 28 February, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated air and missile attacks on Iran that killed Khamenei and several senior military figures.

Since then, Israel says it has carried out about 3,400 strikes inside Iran. Overnight attacks also damaged 16 military aircraft at Mehrabad International Airport.
