by Mark R. Crovelli,Lew Rockwell:
All American presidents lie when they want to take America to war. Such has it been, and so shall it always be. Usually, however, American presidents and their cabinet level co-conspirators are bright enough to come up with lies that are somewhat plausible and internally consistent. They usually feel it necessary to cobble together some sort of semi-consistent narrative capable of hoodwinking more than a few serious people. This administration, on the other hand, is so imbecilic that they cannot go a single day without stating something about this war that is demonstrably self-contradictory or otherwise absurd.

Take the claim that the administration is now making that the Islamic Republic posed a so-called “imminent threat” to Americans and their allies, and thus had to be preemptively eliminated. Trump and his brain trust could have made this argument prior to their brazen attack, and maybe it would have duped a few serious people somewhere in America. But, no, these geniuses chose to trot out this claim of Iran posing an “imminent threat” onlyafterthey had already attacked and they started to realize the severity of the potential legal consequences of their actions. They also started to trot out this argument after casualty figures started to flow out of the region.
And what are those official casualty figures so far from Al Jazeera? The casualty figures according to Al Jazeera are currently showing that as of March 3, the crazed and imminently dangerous Iranian regime has managed to kill 27 people as of March 1 despite firing 1,000’s of missiles and drones. 27 people.Total.
Now, you can say what you will about the accuracy of these figures, but the burden is on the administration to show the immediacy of the threat since they trotted out the immediate threat claim, and they of course are providing us no numbers of their own to refute those of Al Jazeera. If the administration viewed this missile arsenal as virtually an existential threat to the U.S. and its allies we are talking about a misinterpretation of intelligence and reality on a truly spectacular level. Lets just say that thousands and thousands of missiles and drones being fired at 9 countries for 4 straight days producing a total death count of only 27 is not exactly something to strike fear in anyone besides little old Lindsay Graham.
The administration could no doubt counter by saying that these countries are lying about their own casualty figures to downsplay the severity of the situation in which they find themselves, but then this would be an admission that the war isn’t going nearly as swimmingly as Trump’s preening Queen of War Pete Hegseth would lead us to believe. It would also be an outright admission that our so-called “allies” in the region are just liars trying to save their own asses at the expense of dead American servicemen. Which or course they are.
Or maybe the administration could counter Al Jazeera’s casualty count by saying we don’t really know how many people have been killed all over the region. That doesn’t really help them out, though, because admitting ignorance of the fatal consequences of their attack is neither proof of the immediacy of the supposed threat before the attack, nor does it bolster their claims to be outright winning the war.
The idiocy and inconsistency of the “imminent threat” argument from the administration is even more obvious in light of the fact that Trump claims this “imminent threat” can be dealt with in 4 weeks. The Iranian regime is so imminently dangerous that it had to be dealt with last Saturday without waiting to inform Congress, but it’s at the same time so weak that Trump will be able to deal with it in a month. That is seriously what they are asking us to believe. It took us 8 years and 8 months to limp out of Iraq, but Trump would have us believe Iran can be dealt with in a month even though it’s also a supposedly deadly imminent threat.
