In what could conceivably be viewed as the most brutal repression of dissent since the Islamic Revolution in1979, the regime's actions came as part of efforts to suppress anti-government demonstrations that began in December but erupted on January 8.
Thousands of anti-governmentprotestorstook to Iran's streets, but authorities responded by cutting internet and phone communication, and security forces opened fire with live ammunition.
Human rights activists have claimed that, although the final death toll could be higher, at least 6,400 protesters have died in the carnage, but there have been much higher estimates, some as high as 40,000.
