India have finally broken the jinx of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as they defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to lift the T20 World Cup 2026. This makes India the first team in history to win two back-to-back tournaments. This is also the first time that a team has won three World Cups, and also won this tournament on their home soil. India have thus firmly cemented their place as the best white-ball side in the world right now, especially with such a dominant display which ensured that the Kiwis stood no chance of winning.
India got off to a fantastic start in the final against New Zealand, scoring 92 runs in the powerplay, which was the joint-highest in the history of the T20 World Cup. Abhishek Sharma returned to form when it mattered the most scoring 51 runs from 20 balls.
After Abhishek got out, Sanju Samson continued the momentum alongside Ishan Kishan, as the duo stitched a 100-run stand for the second wicket.
Samson went on to score 89 runs, his third 80+ score of the tournament. This was the highest individual score ever in a T20 World Cup final.
Even Kishan slammed a half-century, scoring 54 from 25 balls. However, the Men in Blue had a mini collapse after that, losing four wickets in the span of three overs. As a total of even 235 seemed possible. Shivam Dube stood tall, and smashed 24 runs in the final over, to power India to a score of 255/5
New Zealand never got going in the run-chase as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Tim Seifert showed some fight at the top as he scored a half-century. The Indian bowlers kept the New Zealanders in check. It was Jasprit Bumrah who stood tall as he was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets.
New Zealand could only manage to score159 before being bundled out.
