The incident occurred around 3:40 a.m. at Figueroa Street and Pico Boulevard, near the LA Convention Center.
LAPD officers responded to reports of a man cutting himself and found him in the middle of self-mutilation.
“They found somebody suffering from self-mutilation,” Officer Jeff LeetoldCity News Service. “The individual was cutting himself, bleeding.”
The man, whose identity has not been made public, was pronounced dead at the scene from blood loss.
Eyewitness accounts and freelance journalists from OnSceneTV described a nightmarish scene.

The man had reportedly stripped off his clothing while staggering toward a nearby 7-Eleven before collapsing in a pool of his own blood.
