A dense fog advisory is in effect for Long Island and the New York City metro area from 10 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
The weather service said visibility could fall to a quarter mile or less in dense fog, creating hazardous driving conditions.
Forecasters said low clouds and areas of fog will persist through Saturday, with drizzle possible as cooler air remains in place near the surface. As a warm front approaches and dew points rise over colder nearby waters, the potential for dense fog increases late Saturday afternoon into the evening, with fog expected to become more widespread overnight.
Showers are also possible tonight into early Sunday, with the National Weather Service calling for a chance of rain overnight and into Sunday morning.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights and leave plenty of distance between vehicles, the weather service said.
