TheIsraeli militaryon Sunday warned that it would continue pursuing any successor of Iran's Supreme Leader,Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the joint US and Israeli strikes on Tehran. In a post written in Farsi on the social media platform X, the Israeli military warned that it would also target anyone involved in appointing a successor to Khamenei. The message referred to the clerical body responsible for selecting the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader, which is expected to announce the next leader soon.

“We warn all those who intend to participate in the successor selection meeting that we will not hesitate to target you either. This is a warning!” the Israeli military said in Persian in a post on X.

Reports have suggested that the clerical body that will choose Iran’s next supreme leader has reached a majority consensus. "Some obstacles" still needed to be resolved regarding the process, Iran’s Mehr news agency quoted Assembly of Experts member Ayatollah Mohammad-Mahdi Mirbagheri as saying. Under the Iranian constitution, it is the 88-member Assembly of Experts that is authorised to choose the country’s supreme leader.

In a video posted by Fars news agency on Telegram, Mirbagheri said “great efforts to determine the leadership” have been made and that “a decisive and unanimous opinion” has been agreed upon.

In a separate Fars interview, another member of the body, Hojjatoleslam Jafari, said he hopes “all Iranian people will be satisfied as soon as possible”.

“The delay in electing the third leader is bitter and unwanted for everyone, and there is no alternative, so we should not have bad thoughts about our representatives at this difficult time,” he said.

Amid these deliberations, the Iranian Government, via its Consulate General in Mumbai, also dismissed reports emerging from Israeli media suggesting that Mojtaba Khamenei had been named as his late father's successor.

In a post on X, the consulate stated: "Reports circulating on media regarding potential candidates for leadership selected by Iran's Assembly of Experts have no official source and are officially denied." While Israeli media claimed Mojtaba Khamenei had been chosen, no independent confirmation has surfaced from official Iranian state media.

The conflict in the Middle East has escalated significantly for over a week following the US and Israeli strikes that killed Ayatollah Khamenei and other key figures.
