Breast cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women across the world. Even though the word “cancer” leads to fear, experts say not all breast cancers behave the same way. One of the most important factors doctors use to understand the severity of the disease is the grade of the tumour.
According to Dr. Bhavisha Ghugare, Senior Consultant – Surgical Breast Oncology at HCG Cancer Centre, Borivali, Grade 1 breast cancer is the least aggressive form of breast cancer and often has the most positive prognosis, especially when detected early. “One factor that helps doctors determine the nature of the disease is the grade of the tumour,” he said.
The cancer grade refers to how cancer cells look under a microscope compared to normal breast cells. This helps doctors understand how quickly the tumour is likely to grow and spread. Breast cancer is generally divided into three grades:
Cancer cells resemble normal cells and grow slowly
Cancer cells appear more abnormal and grow faster
Cancer cells look very different from normal cells and grow rapidly
“Grade I breast cancer, also called low-grade or well-differentiated cancer, means that the cancer cells resemble the normal cells of the breast. These cancer cells develop at a slow rate compared to other types of cancer. As a result of the slow growth rate of the cancer cells, Grade I cancer is likely to have a positive response to treatment,” said Dr. Ghugare.
It is very confusing between the terms breast cancer grade and stage, but they describe different aspects of the disease.

According to Dr. Ghugare, grade I breast cancer patients are often diagnosed through screening tests such as a mammogram or a clinical breast examination. The cancer cells of patients diagnosed with Grade I cancer are likely to be small compared to the advancement of the cancer.
