Mumbai is set for a massive infrastructure transformation soon, as the Maharashtra Budget 2026 announced and detailed several infrastructure projects in the city, including the extension of Metro Line 11 (Wadala-Gateway of India) through redeveloped Dharavi up to Bandra station and Bandra Terminus. The extension will add 6.9 km to the planned 16.5 km corridor, making it a 23.4 km-long metro line project to be constructed by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. It is said to cost around Rs 23,487 crore and is currently awaiting approval from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.

According to reports, the total number of stations along the route will also increase from 14 to 19. “The five new stations will be Chunabhatti, Sion, Central Dharavi, Bandra West and Bandra Terminus,” an MMRCL official told Hindustan Times. According to the new proposal, the line will travel underground, from Sewri onwards, below the redeveloped Dharavi, crossing the Mithi river, and eventually ending at Bandra Terminus.

Currently, about 173 km of Metro lines are operational across Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur with 50 km of Metro network to be opened in the coming year, including stretches of Line 9 (Dahisar to Mira Bhayandar), Line 2B (Mandale to DN Nagar), Line 4 (Wadala to Thane) and Line 5 (Thane to Bhiwandi to Kalyan). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in his Budget speech in the state assembly on Friday, said that the government plans to develop 1,200 km of metro lines and more than 6,000 km of expressways to create a continuous connectivity network for passenger and freight transport by 2047.

By 2029, another 165 km of Metro corridors are set to be operational, including Metro Line 8 connecting the Mumbai airport with the Navi Mumbai International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 22,862 crore.
