Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Saudi Arabia has assured Iran that its land, territorial waters and airspace will not be used to launch attacks against the Islamic Republic, amid rising tensions in the West Asia.
He stressed that aggression by the United States and Israel is responsible for the escalation, adding that Iran seeks friendship with its neighbors but will respond decisively to any aggression.
Earlier on Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologised to neighbouring countries that were hit by recent Iranian strikes, saying Iran would avoid targeting regional states unless attacks against it originated from their territory.
“I apologise… to the neighbouring countries that were attacked by Iran," Pezeshkian said in a speech broadcast by state television. He said the country had adopted a policy of refraining from attacks on neighbouring nations unless those territories were used to launch strikes against Iran.
“Iran will not carry out attacks or missile strikes against neighboring countries unless an attack against Iran originates from those countries," Pezeshkian was quoted by Iran International as saying.
He added that Tehran harbours no hostility toward neighbouring countries and does not seek confrontation with governments across the region, even as tensions with Israel and the United States continue.
For the past week, Iran has launched waves of missile and drone strikes in retaliation for the killing of its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The attacks have targeted several Gulf locations, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, with videos circulating online showing damage and explosions across parts of the region.
