Stand-up comedian writer Aishwarya Mohanraj has candidly admitted losing around 22 kg in six months with the help of blockbuster GLP-1 drugs, which have surged in popularity across the world.
The 31-year-old has been taking the weekly injections of Eli Lily’s Mounjaro since August last year. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and is part of a new class of drugs transforming obesity treatment. Mounjaro was originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking hormones known as glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, and GIP, which regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. By slowing gastric emptying and increasing feelings of fullness, these drugs significantly reduce calorie intake, leading to quick weight loss.
Other popular GLP-1 medications include semaglutide-based drugs prescribed for obesity and diabetes. Clinical trials have shown patients can lose 10 to 20 per cent of their body weight under medical supervision.

Leading specialists emphasise that GLP-1 drugs should only be initiated under medical supervision, ideally by an endocrinologist or internal medicine specialist. Those with a BMI of 30 and above, even without other comorbid conditions, and others with a BMI of 27 and above should also take these drugs only under supervision.
However, before prescribing, doctors recommend detailed blood tests to assess metabolic health, along with body composition analysis to evaluate fat and muscle ratio, to determine whether a patient is an appropriate candidate.
When prescribed appropriately and monitored by healthcare professionals, GLP-1 drugs are considered safe and effective.
