I am touring the area from Four Corners to Moab Utah.
Utah has so many rocks because its land spent hundreds of millions of years changing between deep ocean floors, giant deserts, and violent volcanic zones.
Ancient Oceans and Deserts
Seas: Millions of years ago, warm, shallow seas covered parts of Utah. Dead sea creatures piled up on the bottom. Their shells and bones hardened into thick layers of limestone.
Sand Dunes: Huge deserts with massive blowing sand dunes (like today's Sahara) covered other areas. The sand eventually pressed down and turned into thick sandstone, which you can see in places like Zion and Arches.
Mountain Building and Tectonics
Tectonic Plates: Moving plates in the Earth's crust crashed together. This pushed flat rock layers high into the sky to form mountains like the Wasatch and Uinta ranges.
Volcanoes: Magma pushed up through the ground and cooled into hard granite, while other volcanic blasts sprayed thick ash that turned into rock.

Weather and Erosion
Wind and Water: Rain, ice, wind, and melting glaciers carved away the softer rock over millions of years.
Hard vs. Soft: Harder rocks (like sandstone and granite) stayed behind as cliffs, arches, and peaks, while softer rocks washed away.
Iron Color: Iron minerals inside the stone rusted over time, giving Utah's famous "Red Rock Country" its bright red, pink, and orange colors. [
