A bizarre moment during an alcohol checkpoint in Guayaquil, Ecuador, has gone viral after a man was filmed apparently trying to make a phone call using a debit card. The incident happened Thursday night, September 3, near the exit of the Santa Ana Tunnel, where officers from Guayaquil’s Municipal Transit and Mobility Agency (ATM) were conducting alcohol checks. Video footage shows the man standing outside a vehicle and holding what appears to be a debit card and his identification card against his ear, seemingly as if he were talking on a cellphone. Social media users quickly claimed that the man was attempting to call his lawyer. The unusual scene sparked widespread jokes online, with some users humorously suggesting that he was trying to make a “contactless call.” However, authorities later clarified an important detail: the man seen holding the card was not the driver. He was a passenger in the vehicle. The ATM confirmed that the incident occurred during an alcohol-control operation but did not identify the passenger or confirm that he was actually attempting to contact a lawyer. The man later explained that he had been drinking and had mixed beer, wine and vodka. According to his account, he became confused and mistook the identification card and debit card in his hand for a cellphone when he tried to ask for help. He also said that his uncle was the person driving the vehicle.
