Former President Roh Moo-hyun remains a figure of the present in South Korean politics. He is still one of the pillars used to explain the identity of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), while his name is repeatedly invoked to lend legitimacy to particular political factions or policy agendas. Ahead of the DPK’s national convention in August, candidates for party leadership competed to put forward their own interpretations of Roh, while even whether someone attended his funeral became a point of contention in debates over who could claim to be the party’s legitimate heir. The abolition of prosecutors’ supplementary investigative powers was also described as “a homework assignment left by the late president.” As different political forces invoke only the version of Roh that serves their own interests, concerns have grown that misconceptions about him are spreading and that younger generations who did not know him well may feel increasingly disconnected from his legacy.
