September 4th, 2026 BROOKLYN, New York - Mourners gathered at Parkside Plaza Friday evening for a candlelight vigil honoring Pierre Damas Bel, the 20-year-old Haitian college student who died in Ohio this week while under ICE electronic monitoring. The vigil was called by the Party for Socialism and Liberation and Defans Karayib / Caribbean Defense, billed on organizer materials as a vigil for Bel "and all victims of ICE terror." Bel died Monday, August 31, near Springfield, Ohio, after parking his car on the shoulder of Interstate 70, walking into the westbound lanes and being struck by a tractor-trailer, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Springfield Post.
