Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Saturday promised a monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 for women who are heads of families and below 60 years of age, along with six free LPG cylinders annually for every family, if his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) comes to power in Tamil Nadu. However, the monthly aid will not apply to families where a member is employed in the state or central government.

Vijay also said the safety of women, children and the elderly would be a top priority, and a separate government department would be created to address their safety and welfare under his direct supervision.

He announced the creation of a “Rani Velu Nachiyar Force” to ensure zero tolerance for crimes against women. Around 500 such groups would be deployed across Tamil Nadu to provide security at crowded places, with personnel equipped with body cameras.

Vijay also promised to set up “Anjalai Ammal Super Fast Women’s Courts” to hear cases related to crimes against women and ensure timely justice.

He said smart panic buttons would be installed in public transport vehicles and private share autos for women’s safety. The buttons would be linked to a 24/7 centralised command centre, enabling authorities to respond within five minutes.

A “Zero Dark Spots” initiative would also be introduced to ensure that no public place in Tamil Nadu remains without lighting and CCTV surveillance.

Among other welfare measures, Vijay said eight grams of gold and a silk saree would be provided to women at the time of their marriage, calling it “their brother Vijay’s contribution” to their celebrations.

Criticising the Tamil Nadu government’s free bus scheme for women, Vijay said the benefit is currently limited to “pink buses,” forcing beneficiaries to wait for those buses to avail the service.

He said that if TVK comes to power, women would be allowed to travel free in all government buses.

Vijay further said financial distress is one of the key reasons behind school dropouts and pledged support to address it. He said the mother or guardian of every child studying from Class 1 to Class 12 would receive Rs 15,000 annually to help prevent students from dropping out.
