Behzad Mirzaei says his nearly 80-year-old mother lives alone in Tehran, near areas that have already been hit
Behzad Mirzaei, who has lived in Hong Kong for three decades, is losing sleep as tensions involving Iran escalate, worried about his elderly mother in Tehran.
The founder of the Persian Club is among Hong Kong’s small Iranian community who are watching the war with mounting anxiety, waiting for daily updates and fearing for loved ones thousands of kilometres away.
“Every night before I go to sleep, I have this nightmare – that anxiety – about what will happen,” the 57-year-old said. “On a few nights, I could not sleep until 3.30am or 4am.”
“I’m just following every second – which area [the strikes] hit – trying to remember the map of Tehran and say: ‘At least my mother is safe.’”
The latest escalation in the Middle East, involving Israeli and US strikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory attacks, has raised fears of a wider regional war.
Tehran has vowed to resist foreign pressure, while Western leaders have stepped up both military and political efforts against the country.
