In Trenton, New Jersey, police say 11 people were shot during a large gathering on the 100 block of Locust Street shortly after midnight. Two victims were killed and nine others were hospitalized following the Trenton mass shooting. Authorities responded to the residential area in Mercer County after reports of multiple shots fired. Investigators have not publicly announced a motive, suspect identity or arrests.
The investigation is being led by the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies.
Hours earlier in Chicago, Illinois, another mass shooting erupted near Washington Park at approximately 5400 South Cottage Grove Avenue. Chicago police say 10 people were shot during a large gathering or picnic while officers were already working to disperse the crowd. A 35-year-old man was killed and nine additional victims were wounded.
Police have said unknown individuals fired into the crowd. No Chicago police officers were injured. Authorities have not announced a motive, and no charges have been publicly confirmed.
There was also a separate deadly shooting in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood near 37th Street and Michigan Avenue that occurred shortly before the Washington Park shooting. That incident is separate from the 21 victims involved in the Trenton and Washington Park mass shootings.
