The United States used Precision Strike Missiles (PrSMs) for the first time during its ongoing war with Iran, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM). However, it is still unknown where these PrSMs were launched from, or which specific targets they hit in Iran. The US and Israel have battered Iran with strikes, targeting its military capabilities, leadership and nuclear program. The stated goals and timelines for the war have repeatedly shifted, as the US has at times suggested it seeks to topple Iran's government or elevate new leadership from within. Iran launched more retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf countries.
"In a historic first, long-range Precision Strike Missiles (PrSMs) were used in combat during Operation Epic Fury," CENTCOM wrote in a post on X. "I just could not be prouder of our men and women in uniform leveraging innovation to create dilemmas for the enemy," said CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper.
The video shows a PrSM being fired from a M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in a desert setting.
Precision Strike Missiles (PrSMs) can be simply understood as long-range precision strike missiles. They have been developed by Lockheed Martin. The first PrSMs were delivered to the US Army in December 2023.
PrSMs can hit targets ranging from 60km (37 miles) to more than 499km (310 miles) away, according to Lockheed Martin.
The company’s website adds that PrSMs are compatible with the MLRS M270 (Multiple-Launch Rocket Systems) and HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) family of launchers, both also developed by Lockheed and used by both the United Kingdom and US armies.
The US' Central Command has shared a list of targets and military assets used during the first seven days of the conflict. According to CENTCOM, US forces struck over 3,000 targets during the first week of the campaign.
Officials said the operation targeted facilities linked to Iran’s military leadership and defense systems. Several Iranian naval vessels also suffered damage during the strikes. Reports said at least 43 Iranian ships were damaged or destroyed during the first seven days of the campaign.
Many of the targets connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, one of the most powerful branches of Iran’s military structure, were also hit.
US President Donald Trump said Friday that he would not seek a deal with Iran without the country's "unconditional surrender" as Washington warned of a forthcoming bombing campaign that officials said would be the most intense of the weeklong conflict. Israel said it began a broad wave of strikes on Tehran early Saturday, with Associated Press video showing explosions and large plumes of smoke billowing over the western part of the capital city.
