New Delhi:A real estate businessman was shot dead by unidentified assailants in southwest Delhi's Chhawla area on Friday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Balwan Gehlot. According to police, the attackers chased Gehlot on a motorcycle and shot him at point blank range while he was alone in his car near an agricultural farm. A passerby heard the gunshot around 1pm and alerted police. Gehlot was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Police received the PCR call shortly after.

"The attackers found the target alone in his car and shot him. A gangster living abroad had recently issued a threat to him. Police are investigating the matter," a senior officer said.

The murder is allegedly the fallout of a failed extortion attempt. Sources said police are investigating the role of UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan, who had recently threatened Gehlot and demanded Rs 2 crore as protection money. On the same day, Sangwan allegedly threatened another businessman in the trans-Yamuna area, sources added.

If confirmed, this would be the second extortion-linked killing in a month. In February, businessman Vaibhav Gandhi was shot dead by assailants affiliated to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in Bawana. Sangwan operates in alliance with Bishnoi.

Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the shooters and the vehicle used in the getaway. Forensic teams have collected shell casings from the spot to determine the calibre of weapons used. Several teams have been formed and an FIR has been registered.

Sangwan, originally from Najafgarh, fled to the UK in 2020 using forged documents. He is wanted in multiple cases of extortion, contract killings and gang wars. On Indian law enforcement's request, Interpol has issued a Red Corner notice against him. After lying low for several months last year, Sangwan has become active again in recent months. His brother Jyoti, also a gangster, is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
