Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol abruptly cancelled his planned trip to the United States for the meetings of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bank governors, despite having already arrived at Incheon International Airport on Sunday, according to government insiders. Koo was due to travel to Asheville, North Carolina, for the G20 gathering and meet with finance officials from several countries, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Those bilateral meetings were also canceled following the decision. The last-minute decision was both unexpected and highly unusual as Koo had already arrived at the airport. Photographers were at the airport to cover his departure, and some outlets had published photos of Koo ahead of his scheduled flight. The Ministry of Finance and Economy had likewise prepared a press release announcing his departure, only to pull it shortly before distribution. The ministry attributed the cancellation to a “change in schedule” and apologized for the short notice.
