The CIA doesn’t need to secretly control every newsroom when the media system already repeats the intelligence community’s preferred narratives.
The Church Committee documented covert relationships between American journalists and the CIA. Carl Bernstein later reported that hundreds of journalists had performed assignments for the agency. Today, selective leaks, anonymous officials and former intelligence leaders appearing as television experts can still influence which stories Americans see—and which questions they are discouraged from asking.
I also explain why political reaction channels are trapped inside this system. When creators continually react to clips selected and framed by major media organizations, they may unknowingly help distribute the same narrative they believe they are challenging.
This is not an accusation that every journalist is an intelligence asset. It is a closer look at how access, repetition and institutional incentives can shape public opinion without anyone issuing a direct order.
