A judge denied Karmelo Anthony's motion for a new trial following his conviction for the murder of Austin Metcalf, who was stabbed in the chest during a confrontation at a track meet.
Anthony received a 35-year prison sentence. His attorneys argued the trial was improperly closed to the public and that a gentleman's agreement between prosecutors and the defense violated his right to testify. The court reviewed prior bad acts evidence for both parties, including spray-painting incidents involving Metcalf at age ten that included KKK symbols and racial slurs, and text messages from Anthony dating to 2021 containing racial slurs, threats against a girlfriend, and references to carrying knives and guns on school campuses.
