Two Colorado State Patrol troopers were shot Tuesday morning while attempting a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 24 near Woodland Park in Teller County, west of Colorado Springs.
According to authorities, the shooting happened at approximately 7:15 a.m. near the Woodland Park area. Both troopers were struck by gunfire. One trooper suffered serious injuries while the second suffered minor injuries. The wounded troopers were able to get themselves to a hospital for treatment.
The suspect fled after the shooting, prompting an intensive search involving Colorado State Patrol, the Teller County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies.
Authorities said the suspect was associated with a blue Subaru Impreza hatchback with license plates that were obscured or difficult to see. Investigators believe he traveled toward the Westwood Lakes and Woodland West areas before potentially fleeing on foot.
Residents in portions of the Woodland Park area were told to shelter in place as law enforcement searched for the suspect. A Colorado Blue Alert was also issued because the suspect is accused of seriously injuring law enforcement officers and was considered armed and dangerous.
The investigation and manhunt remain developing. Information concerning the suspect's location, the circumstances surrounding the original traffic stop and the condition of the injured Colorado State Patrol troopers may change as authorities release additional details.
