This little poodle definitely needed a bath after the morning it had.
A small dog was pulled to safety Friday morning after falling into a collapsed cesspool behind a home in Shirley, prompting a ever-careful rescue by Suffolk County police officers and local firefighters.
The dog fell into the hole in the backyard of a Concord Road home about 7:15 a.m., Suffolk Police said. Seventh Precinct officers Anthony Cardinale and John Phalen responded and worked alongside Mastic Fire Department members to reach the trapped pup.
Using a ladder and an animal catch pole — a long control pole with a wire loop used to safely secure animals — rescuers carefully lifted the small poodle from the murky waste of the cesspool, which appeared to be roughly seven to eight feet down from the surface.

Body camera video released by police shows the quiet but tense rescue as the dog splashes around a bit in the waste before the pet is slowly hoisted up from inside the pit and brought to the surface.
“Sorry, buddy,” one of the officers said to the dog as he slipped the long-wire loop around the poodle. “This might hurt a little bit.”
But the apprecitiave dog never made a peep.
Aside from being shaken up — and badly in need of a wash — the dog appeared unharmed and was wrapped in an American-flag towel by a volunteer firefighter before being returned to its owner, police said.
