As Balendra Shah- the rapper-turned-politician known as Balen- surges toward becoming Nepal’s next Prime Minister following the RSP’s landslide performance, attention is turning to the woman beside him: Sabina Kafle, a public health professional, poet and the quietly influential partner behind one of Nepal’s most remarkable political rises.

Sabina Kafle is a public health professional and writer who has worked on health programmes in Nepal, including roles linked to the United Nations Population Fund. Away from her professional work, she has written poetry and literature reflecting both social issues and personal themes. Sabina Kafle occasionally appears at public events or on social media, largely staying out of the political spotlight.

Their story reportedly began in 2017 at a literary or creative event which brought together writers, artists and social commentators in Kathmandu. Balen, already making a name for himself in Nepal’s hip-hop scene with socially conscious tracks, was reportedly struck by Sabina Kafle’s simplicity and creative thinking. Conversations after that first meeting gradually turned into a relationship built on shared interests in writing and ideas about society.

The couple married in February 2018 in a small ceremony in the Morang district of Nepal, attended only by close relatives. In 2023, they welcomed a daughter.

Sabina Kafle’s most prominent moment in Nepal’s public discourse came when in 2023, she was stopped by traffic police while travelling in a government vehicle. Balen’s response was explosive as he posted on Facebook threatening to “set Singha Durbar on fire" if municipal vehicles were stopped again. Singha Durbar is Nepal’s main administrative centre, the heart of the federal government. Balen’s team said that police had unnecessarily harassed his wife.
