A New York jury convicted Chester Highway Superintendent John Riley, 49, of first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon for shooting DoorDash driver Alpha Berry in the back on May 6, 2024. Berry, a 24-year-old from West Africa, had knocked on Riley's door seeking directions after his phone died during a delivery in Chester, New York. Surveillance footage showed Riley firing three times at Berry's vehicle as the driver reversed out of the driveway. One bullet struck Berry in the back. Riley was initially held on a $500,000 bond and claimed self-defense at trial. The jury rejected that argument. Orange County Judge sentenced Riley to 17 years in prison on the first-degree assault count, with a concurrent seven-year term on second-degree assault. Riley's wife, Selena Nelson Riley, 46, pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence after deleting 17 doorbell camera videos. Berry filed a civil lawsuit against Riley and the town of Chester. Was 17 years the right sentence? Leave your thoughts below.
