Former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent joins Jimmy to argue that decades of U.S. military intervention in the Middle East have contributed to instability, migration, and continued conflict, while questioning the strategic value of maintaining American bases overseas. He reflects on his own military service and says that many assumptions behind the Iraq War, including claims about weapons of mass destruction and links between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, proved false, while arguing that U.S. intervention helped create or intensify subsequent conflicts. Kent rejects the idea that Muslims broadly constitute an inherent enemy of the United States, instead attributing much of the conflict to U.S. foreign policy and intervention, while also discussing Israel’s influence on American Middle East policy. He ultimately advocates reducing overseas military involvement and maintaining tighter immigration and border controls as a way to limit the domestic consequences of foreign conflicts.
