It's been a long time since the Beatles convinced an entire generation of western youth in 1968 that "enlightenment" and personal peace could be found in the third world backwaters of India's ashram retreats. As it turned out, the world famous band and the yogi scammers of that era would end up creating a trend that would sucker gullible liberals for decades to come.
The hippies were not smart, they were merely impressionable.
Today, the streets of India are likely the same in most places as they were back in the 1960s - Filled with trash and feces and not very safe. The country remains one of the most dangerous tourist markets on the planet for women - Around 90% of rapes go unreported due to law enforcement apathy and a culture of reprisal for women who come forward. Any travel outside of tourist enclaves is considered high risk.
British content creator Amy On The Move discovered this on her first trip to India, but she says she was willing to give the country a second chance. What she found was even more multicultural misery.
She had entered India on a longer-term (year-scale) visa intending a solo cycling trip from Kolkata toward Kerala and up the west coast. After roughly two weeks, including time in Bhadrak, Odisha, she posted videos documenting her experiences there.
